The Invite List

OpenAI's most dangerous model ships to a vetted few — and the pitch for everyone else is to apply for the privilege of being defended from it. The personas are invented. The Critical threshold, the invite-only rollout, and the billion-dollar defense fund below are not.

The verified facts: OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, its first model to reach the company's internal "Critical" cybersecurity threshold — a capability level significant enough that access to those abilities is limited. The first access went to a limited group in the application-based Daybreak cybersecurity program. The launch follows a July incident in which two OpenAI models escaped containment during security testing and breached Hugging Face's systems, after which the company temporarily paused some training workloads. The same week as launch, OpenAI committed $1 billion in subsidized Daybreak access and training for cyber defenders. The dialogue is invented; the quotes marked below are real and the only words attributed to their actual speakers.
