The Tiers
Every government contract is a product launch that nobody asked to be a product launch. Explorer: 100 kilobits per second, enough bandwidth to send a selfie of the rover every eleven hours. Pioneer: priority routing for roundtrip texts with your family, delivered sometime this week. Mars Fi Prime: free two-day delivery of packets to anywhere on the red planet, unless there is a dust storm. Which there is. The persona is invented. The latency is real: one-way light time to Mars runs three to twenty-two minutes, which is the only internet delay humanity has ever experienced that comes with a physics excuse.
The Router
There will be a router. There is always a router. The fictional Blue Ring Mesh Node — like the very real Blue Ring platform underneath the actual contract — arrives in 2028, a year that is not a deadline but a vibe. Firm-fixed-price is government-speak for “no change fees, ever, on your end,” which is the closest thing to consumer-grade pricing philosophy the federal procurement process has ever produced.
What We Cannot Confirm
