The Hot Mic Heard Round the Datacenter

NVIDIA was mid–all-hands on Friday, August 28, celebrating a quarter of ninety-six billion dollars in revenue, up one hundred and six percent, when the CEO’s phone rang and the caller turned out to be the President of the United States. Jensen stepped offstage to take it, forgot the live microphone, and two thousand employees heard the President’s voice on the room audio before the press pool knew a call had happened. The President praised the company on Truth Social hours later. Jensen walked the room through what the interruption did to the quarter: the caller is, definitionally, the disturbance; the microphone is load-bearing; and the hot mic is just telemetry with feelings.

JENSEN: The quarter: ninety-six billion dollars, up one hundred and six percent. But forget the quarter. The quarter is not why two thousand people are staring at me.

JENSEN: Friday. All-hands. Slides titled “The Next Scaling Law.” My phone rings, and the screen says one word. “Donald.”

JENSEN: Here is the thing nobody tells you about running a four-and-a-half trillion dollar company. You cannot send the President to voicemail. He is, definitionally, the disturbance.

JENSEN: So I stepped offstage and took a perfectly normal call in the hallway of my own building. What I did not do is take off the microphone. I have worn a microphone for thirty years. At this point it is load-bearing.

JENSEN: So the entire room hears the President of the United States coming out of the ceiling speakers. Employees heard the call before the press did. Lowest-latency access to power on Earth, and it happened because I forgot to hit mute.

JENSEN: The press calls it an accident. No. Everything at Nvidia reports telemetry. The hot mic is just telemetry with feelings.

JENSEN: I cannot confirm the content of that call. The only verified fact is that the President rang me mid-town-hall, and everyone heard it, because the microphone is part of the jacket now.

JENSEN: In closing: the quarter was ninety-six billion dollars. The loudest sound in it was a ringtone.

The President praised NVIDIA on Truth Social hours later, congratulating the company on a quarter of roughly $96 billion in revenue, up about 106% year over year, for a company valued north of $4.5 trillion. No transcript or recording of the call has surfaced. Employees heard the call before the press pool did: lowest-latency access to power in the recorded history of the semiconductor industry, achieved by forgetting to hit mute.
